Gopeshwar also known as Chamoli Gopeshwar is hill-township, which is located in garhwal hills in Chamoli district of Uttarakhand. It is located around 1400 meters above sea level. It is famous for its weather (pleasant most of the year, but very cold in December and January) and its temples. It is largest town in Chamoli district. The famous places of this town are Pt Dindayal Park, Kund, Gopinath temple etc. You can see many snow capped hills from here. It is one of the best hill stations to visit in Uttarakhand. An ancient temple of Lord Shiva is the main attraction of the town and thousands of pilgrims come here throughout the year to visit it. Besides the ancient temple of Lord Shiva, Vaitarini Kund, a group of temples without idols and Oak view are other places of interest.

Gopinath Temple


The Gopinath Temple is very famous and is dedicated to Lord Shiva. According to an age-old story, there lived a king named Saggar in this area.. He had a cow which used to give milk to a Shiva Linga daily and when the king saw this he constructed the temple in that spot and this is how Gopinath Temple came into existence.An ancient temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, located at Gopeshwar, in Uttarakhand. The temple stands out in its architectural proficiency; it is topped by a magnificent dome and the 30 sq ft sanctum sanctorum, which is accessible by 24 doors. 800 m. from Gopeshwar



Roopkund is a high altitude glacial lake in the Uttarakhand state of India Roopokund is a lake, located at an altitude of 5029 mt above sea level; towards the eastern part of Chamoli District, enroute to Homkund and Nanda Jat. The Roopkund is a very thin kund, some two mt in depth, with edges that remains snow covered during most of the year. Some 500 people had died in the lake, supposedly about 600-800 years ago and investigators reason that they probably died from widespread disease or a natural disaster. Their skeletons can be seen when the snow melts, otherwise preserved in the frigid conditions for most of the year. For this reason, the lake is also called Skeleton Lake

Satopanth Lake


Satopanth lake: According to scriptures, three corners of this lake symbolizes lord Mahesh (Shiva), lord Brahma, lord Vishnu.A triangular lake, the Satopanth Lake is famous for its calm water. It is spread for some half a kilometer in perimeter and it is believed that the trinity of gods Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva occupy the three corners of the lake. It is located some 25 km from Badrinath. Anusuya Devi Temple & Atri Muni Ashram


One of the most famous pilgrim places in Chamoli is the Anusuya Devi Temple, dedicated to goddess Sati. She was the wife of Atri Muni, a great sage and one of the Sapta Rishis (Sapta means seven and rishis mean sages in Sanskrit). It is said that Devi Anusuya fully dedicated to her husband. It is located 12 kms away from Gopeshwar. It is located in the lap of Himalayas which attracts the pilgrims. In the month of December, on the occasion of Duttatreya Jayanti, large fair is organized every year, which is attended by many devotees and tourists. Throughout the night they worship the Goddess Sati through Bhajans with lighted lamps in their hands.
